How Do I Use Recruitment Agencies?
If you have never used a recruitment agency before, it can be a daunting and unfamiliar experience. However, depending on your particular job requirements, it can also be a useful and effective way of gaining your next job. Firstly, though, we should spend a moment looking within a recruitment agency at the recruitment consultant’s role to see how best we can interact with them.
The role of a recruitment consultant is to generate revenue for their company. They do this by finding candidates for their clients (i.e. companies seeking candidates for a role) and submitting them for interview or other selection process. If a candidate that they have put forward is successful and gets the job, they get paid. If not, they generally don’t, unless they have some other arrangement with the client.
So it should be remembered that it is not their role to find jobs for you, manage your career or put you in front of any employer, whether you are suitable or not, ‘just in case’ you get the job. They have probably spent a long time and a lot of effort in building up a bond with their client base and so are unlikely to do anything to run the risk of souring that relationship.
And of course, recruitment consultants can only put people forward for vacancies that exist! If there aren’t any in your chosen field, you will need to rethink your goals unless you are happy to wait until a role comes along that is suitable for your skills and experience.
With this in mind, you should only register with agencies that operate in your target market. There is no point in spending lots of time registering with every agency you come across. Carry out some research, figure out who works in the areas that you want to work in and get busy building a good relationship with recruitment consultants in that area. And remember that they have a busy and, often, stressful job.
